In the twentieth century, the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) became China’s last imperial dynasty as a new, modern state was established. Chinese artists of the time actively sought to expand their horizons by studying abroad in Europe and Japan. Combining their experiences and influences obtained abroad with Chinese tradition, these artists created a moment ripe for devising new styles of Chinese painting. The diverse range of twentieth-century Chinese paintings on exhibit here offers valuable insights into how these artists looked beyond tradition in their search for new expressions.
