表庆馆于明治33年（1900）为纪念皇太子（后来的大正天皇）成婚而策划兴建，于明治42年（1909）开馆，是日本首个真正意义上的美术馆。设计者是J.肯德尔的弟子、也曾设计过东宫御所（现在的迎宾馆）等建筑的宫廷建筑师片山东熊。建筑中央和左右均戴有美丽的圆形屋顶，上层部分的外墙面上装饰着制图用具、工具和乐器等造型的浮雕。作为明治末期西式建筑的代表性建筑物，于昭和53年（1978）被评为重要文化财。

High-resolution facsimiles of all thirty scrolls of master painter Itō Jakuchū’s Colorful Realm of Living Beings （National Treasure） paintings will be displayed at the Tokyo National Museum’s Hyokeikan galleries this spring. The facsimiles are the result of a joint research project for the utilization of high-quality reproductions of cultural properties by the National Center for the Promotion of Cultural Properties and Canon Inc. The works will be on public display to celebrate the completion of the project and in anticipation of the grand reopening of the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan.
