Image Service and Filming

TNM freely provides images for press usage to TV programs, publications and websites (excluding websites run by individuals) provided the images are used for at least one of the following purposes:

  • 1.To introduce TNM (this must include basic information such as opening times/holidays, etc.)
  • 2.To publicize or broadcast information about exhibitions.
  • 3.To publicize or broadcast information about events.
Images for press usage include images of the Museum buildings or works in the Museum’s collection (though this is limited to works scheduled for exhibition at the time of publication or broadcasting)

Image loans do not exist.

Special Exhibitions

Image loans from special exhibitions are currently unavailable.

Regular Exhibitions

Important Notices

  • *1.It is prohibited to use images for purposes other than the purpose stated in the application.
  • *2.The images must be deleted promptly after use. The images must not be retained or passed on to a third party.
  • *3.The name of the work and the work’s owner must be clearly stated at the time of publication or broadcasting.
  • *4.Drafts or plans must be confirmed with the TNM Public Relations & Press Section and the public relations office of each special exhibition prior to publication or broadcasting.
  • *5.Publications or broadcasting data should be sent to the TNM Public Relations & Press Section and the public relations office of each special exhibition.

    • [Filming]

    As a general rule, TNM charges for the use of images or filming for purposes other than TNM press.

    The application procedure will differ according to your purpose of your request.

    If you wish to use the Museum as a location for drama or film shooting, please go to the Facility Rental page.

    For conservation reasons, we generally do not accept requests to take photos of works in our collection. Please use our pre-existing image archive.

    TNM allows filming for TV programs, publications and websites (excluding websites run by individuals) provided the filming is used for at least one of the following purposes:

    • 1.To introduce TNM (this must include basic information such as opening times/holidays, etc.)
    • 2.To publicize or broadcast information about exhibitions.
    • 3.To publicize or broadcast information about events
    This includes filming of the interior and exterior of the Museum, filming of works (though this is limited to works on display in the galleries) and interviews, etc.

    After checking the details of the application, we will contact you regarding the possibility of filming or to arrange the filming date, etc.

    Important Notices

  • *1.It is prohibited to use images for purposes other than the purpose stated in the application.
  • *2.The instructions of Tokyo National Museum staff must be followed when filming.
  • *3.The exhibition name, date and location, etc. must be clearly stated in the article or program
  • *4.Publications or broadcasting data should be sent to the TNM Public Relations & Press Section and the public relations office of each special exhibition.
