Korean Fans, Joseon dynasty, 19th - 20th century

    Asian Gallery (Toyokan) Room 10
    July 19, 2006 (Wed) - September 3, 2006 (Sun)

Introduces fans from the Joseon dynasty period of Korea. During the Joseon dynasty period, men usually used folding fans and women mainly used round fans. The colorful ladies' fans often appear with women in paintings.

Another characteristic of Korean fans is that they have different Korean names according to their shapes and patterns. Some are made to resemble banana leaves, paulownia leaves, or birds' tails. Others have traditional Korean patterns, such as yin and yang.

Enjoy how the people elegantly designed their everyday tools to stand the summer heat.
