Masterpieces of Chinese Painting from the Ming and Qing Dynasties

Masterpieces of Chinese Painting from the Ming and Qing Dynasties / Toyokan Room 8   October 30, 2007 (Tue) - December 27, 2007 (Thu)

Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons, By Lu Ji, Ming dynasty, 15th - 16th century (Important Cultural Property, on exhibit through November 25, 2007)

We are pleased to present the exhibition of excellent Chinese paintings from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties. The display is in two installments, and the artists featured in the first period include the early Ming literati painter Wang Fu (1362-1416), the flower-and-bird painter Lu Ji from the Ming court academy, and Zhang Lu (1464-1538?), an independent artist of the Zhe school.

The second period highlights two Ming dynasty hanging scrolls depicting a landscape in the "Mi style", which was created by the Northern Song painter Mi Fu (1051-1107). Notable Ming dynasty artists include Lu Wenying, the court academy painter, Yang Wencong (1597-1645), a government official and literati painter from the late Ming dynasty who died in a battle against the Qing army. Artists from the Qing dynasty such as Gong Xian (1619-89) of the Jinling school, as well as some literati and genre painters are also featured. We hope that visitors will enjoy the many different styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
