Lasting from the 15th to 19th century, the Kanō school produced generation after generation of talented artists, eventually becoming one of history’s most celebrated schools of Japanese painting.

During the military rule of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1868), the Kobikichō branch of the Kanō school attained the highest rank available to artists and played a central role in shaping the art world of its time.

Using works in the Museum’s collection, this exhibition explores the significance of the Kobikichō Kanō studio’s commissions, teaching activities, and copied materials.
