This scroll is among the most important works of sacred calligraphy in Japan. It contains chapter two of the influential Buddhist writing known as the Lotus Sutra. This chapter teaches that the Buddha’s wisdom is profoundly deep and that enlightenment lies in discerning the true nature of reality.
This scroll, along with twenty-nine others containing the complete Lotus Sutra, was commissioned by Emperor Toba (1103–1156), Empress Taikenmon’in (1101–1145), and their followers at the imperial court. They hoped that creating this copy of the sutra would ensure their rebirth in a Buddhist paradise known as the Pure Land. The meticulously brushed calligraphy and ornate decoration in gold and silver reflect their aesthetic sensibilities and deep devotion to Buddhism.
