"Kofun period" means "burial-mound period." Our perceptions of culture during the Kofun period (ca. 3rd–7th century) are based on grave goods unearthed from burial mounds. Initially, this period was divided into two phases. Later, scholars began to argue for the recognition of a middle phase in the 5th century. This new hypothesis was based on findings obtained from archaeological artifacts in the Museum's collection.
