Roof tiles were used mainly on structures such as temples and shrines since ancient times. By the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573–1603), however, many castles were being roofed with tiles bearing the family crests of local samurai lords. This section of the gallery showcases gilt roof tiles from two structures in Kyoto built for the renowned warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598): Fushimi Castle and Jurakudai, a castle-like magnificent residence.
