This scroll with poems by the Chinese poet Bai Juyi (772–846) on decorated paper was probably inscribed by Fujiwara no Yukinari (972–1027), one of the "Three Brushes" who perfected Japanese-style calligraphy. Chinese poetry by Bai Juyi and his contemporaries was an essential part of the education of court nobles in the Heian period (794–1192). Unlike similar works used as models of calligraphy to emulate, this scroll was appreciated and passed on as a gift. One of the postscripts, added by one of its owners, mentions the scroll was a favorite of Emperor Fushimi (1265–1317), a famous calligrapher himself.
