Bound Fan Papers with the “Lotus Sutra”, 12th century (National Treasure)
Japanese Gallery (Honkan) Room 2
September 8, 2020 (Tue) - October 4, 2020 (Sun)
This version of the Lotus Sutra was inscribed on bound fan papers. Decorated sutras such as this one were copied and dedicated to temples by nobles of the imperial court. As a sutra propagating the possibility of enlightenment for women, the Lotus Sutra was often dedicated by high court ladies, including the empress. The underdrawings of protective deities mentioned in the sutra are depicted here as women of the imperial court, possibly a reference to its donator.
