The Noh play Eguchi is based on a story in which the monk-poet Saigyo receives lodging at the home of the harlot of Eguchi. The latter act of Eguchi is quite lively, featuring the appearance of the spirits of three courtesans, riding in a boat and lamenting their sinful lives while hoping for salvation. They are played by actors wearing ko’omote masks and karaori garments with red coloring, both of which are typically used for depicting young women in Noh. The setting for this scene is nighttime, with the clear autumn moon shining brilliantly. We invite you to imagine this setting while viewing the masks and costumes on display.
