January 2, 2015 (Fri) - January 25, 2015 (Sun)This exhibition features paintings and prints associated with the New Year season. These include scenes of a celebratory manzai performance, the game of battledore and shuttlecock, and people exchanging New Year greetings. Also included in the lineup are woodblock prints with spring-themed poems that were created at New Year poetry parties. In the Edo period, these prints, which had illustrations of felicitous plum trees or hawks, were customarily given out to acquaintances. Other works depict Mount Fuji and scenes of the first sunrise of the year at Futamigaura beach, as well as auspicious motifs such as the Seven Gods of Good Fortune.
