September 2, 2014 (Tue) - September 28, 2014 (Sun)This exhibition features works by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753?-1806), a skilled ukiyo-e artist renowned for his portrayal of Japanese beauties. Utamaro began his career receiving commissions related to comic kyoka poems, a highly popular form of literary art at the time, such as illustrations for printed books. Later, he gradually established his own artistic style in pursuit of depicting feminine beauty, which is amply shown through the works selected for this exhibition. The works on exhibit consist of prints created in the Tenmei era (1781-1789), during which Utamaro was developing his style, and in the Kansei era (1789-1801), a period when his artistic achievement was at its peak, as well as one of his paintings.
