High-Resolution Facsimiles of Ito Jakuchu's “Colorful Realm of Living Beings”and Kano Eitoku's “Chinese Lions”

Hyokeikan Exhibit Precedes the Museum of the Imperial Collections’ Grand Opening

High-resolution facsimiles of all thirty scrolls of master painter Itō Jakuchū’s Colorful Realm of Living Beings (National Treasure) paintings will be displayed at the Tokyo National Museum’s Hyokeikan galleries this spring. The facsimiles are the result of a joint research project for the utilization of high-quality reproductions of cultural properties by the National Center for the Promotion of Cultural Properties and Canon Inc. The works will be on public display to celebrate the completion of the project and in anticipation of the grand reopening of the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan.
The exhibition will display the thirty scrolls in two phases, fifteen at a time. Also featured will be the high-resolution facsimile completed in 2023 of the Chinese Lions folding screens, a National Treasure by master painter Kanō Eitoku (1543–1590).
The Hyokeikan was planned in 1900 to commemorate the marriage of the Crown Prince (later Emperor Taishō)and completed in 1909. It was Japan’s first full-fledged art museum.
