Witness the digital recreation of an enormous World Heritage Site! Embark on a journey to the timeless Bayon Temple.
The Bayon Temple stands out among the World Heritage sites of the Angkor complex in Cambodia. To preserve this cultural heritage site of immense proportions, Japanese researchers embarked on a challenge about twenty years ago to digitally measure the site. They pioneered new techniques to do so, at a time before drones were even invented. This VR program is the fruit of their work.
Created with the approval of the Cambodian government, the program is a complete digitization of the entire 1,000,000 square-meter Bayon Temple. It features the site’s large stone statues of gently smiling faces that were built when the Khmer Empire flourished from the 800s to the 1400s, as well as reliefs that depict everyday life during that time. In its recreation of this extraordinarily unique World Heritage site, this pioneering VR program pushes the boundaries of what was possible during the early days of digital archiving. We are proud to present this work for your viewing pleasure.
