This monkey's facial expressions and pose are quite human-like, lending a certain charm to this work. The animal is said to be a Japanese monkey, which was rare in China at the time. The famed Japanese painter, Kanō Tan'yū (1602–1674), was the first to attribute this work to Mao Song, a court painter of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279).
