This jar was intended to hold water for refilling the kettle and rinsing tea bowls during tea gatherings. It showcases the rugged beauty of Shigaraki pottery, which comes from a mountainous region east of Kyoto. Under the intense heat of a wood-burning kiln, the surface became cracked, scorched, and partially coated by a glassy glaze.
