Ritual Incense Burner with a Handle and Lion-Shaped Counterweight

Incense burners with handles are used to make ritual offerings of fragrance to Buddhist gods. Following another type with a handle shaped like a magpie's tail, this type with a weight shaped like a lion became prevalent during the Nara period (710–794). In China, similar examples have been excavated from Tang-dynasty sites.
