This narrative picture scroll recounts a tale about a sparrow named Kotōta. After his child is eaten by a snake, Kotōta exchanges poems with other birds who have come to console him, and eventually renounces the world. The vertical length of this scroll is only about half of regular lengths of other scrolls.
