Pompeii, a city of the Roman Empire, was swallowed by ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius near Naples erupted violently in 79 AD. The excavation of Pompeii began in the 18th century and continues to this day. This exhibition presents masterpieces of mural painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, alongside tableware, kitchen tools, and other implements of daily life.

TEWAZA: Recreating Ryukyuan Handicraft Culture

Between 2015 and 2020, the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum spearheaded a project to create reproductions of sixty-five objects that encapsulate the culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom. In presenting a selection of their re-creations here, we hope to bring the aesthetic world of the Ryukyuan people into modern day, and, in doing so, highlight the connections between Okinawa’s heritage and its future.

This exhibition introduces Zhao Mengfu’s art through four chapters: 1) Painting and Calligraphy before Zhao Mengfu, 2) Zhao Mengfu and Yuan-Dynasty Calligraphy, 3) Paintings of the Yuan Dynasty, and 4) Zhao’s Reception in the Ming Dynasty.

Like a samurai warlord proclaiming a new era after his conquest, the artist Hasegawa Tōhaku proclaimed a new era with his brush. Tōhaku’s ink painting Pine Trees is an enchanting masterpiece that remains shrouded in mystery.
