The art of the Muromachi period (1392–1573) is commonly represented by the cultural circles of the third shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358–1408), and the eighth shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1435–90). Ink paintings by artists such as Sesshu (1420–1506) also constitute an integral element of Muromachi art.

During this period, however, many Japanese-style paintings called yamato-e were also created. These paintings make use of traditional painting techniques and themes while demonstrating surprising brilliance and innovation.

This exhibition traces works by yamato-e painters of the Muromachi period, and sheds light on their rich modes of expression.
