Japanese Gallery (Honkan) Room 15
October 3, 2017 (Tue) - November 26, 2017 (Sun)
The compilation of Japanese art history began in earnest around 1897 (Meiji 30), by the Imperial Museum (forerunner of the Tokyo National Museum), after being commissioned by the Agriculture and Commerce Ministry. It was completed as Histoire de l’art du Japon to coincide with the Paris World Exposition of 1900, and in the next year, was published as The Brief History of Art in Imperial Japan.
This exhibition features the activities of the museum in its initial stages as an art museum, through records related to the compilation of The Brief History of Art in Imperial Japan.
