Ogawa Kazumasa (1860–1929) was a photographer active from the Meiji to the early Showa era. In 1901, he accompanied an expedition from the Tokyo Imperial University (now University of Tokyo) for architectural research of the emperors’ chambers at the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, the capital of the Qing dynasty. He photographed the palaces along with historic sites and scenic views in the city. This exhibition introduces Beijing at the end of the Qing dynasty, from Ogawa Kazumasa’s Photographs of the City of Beijing.
