Tang Sancai: Three-color Glazed Wares of the Tang Dynasty

Chinese ceramic wares – their forms and decorations in particular – have evolved through outstanding techniques over a long period of time. This exhibition features Tang sancai, or three-color glazed wares of the Tang dynasty (618–907), which are characterized by their dynamic representations of human figures and animals. Another characteristic of Tang sancai is the use of glazes in vivid colors, such as green, yellow, and indigo, that melt at lower temperatures in the kiln.

Tokyo National Museum’s Tang sancai collection comprises significant ceramic works donated by the architect Yokogawa Tamisuke and the antique art dealer Hirota Matsushige (Fukkosai), as well as prized works purchased directly by Japanese collectors who visited China in the early 20th century. Referring to the latest research, this exhibition chronologically presents the Museum’s historically-important Tang sancai collection in a systematic fashion. Visitors are invited to appreciate the charm of Tang sancai, which continues to leave lasting impressions with their unique beauty.
