Kuroda Seiki, Master of Modern Japanese Painting: The 150th Anniversary of his Birth

2016 marks the 150th anniversary of Kuroda Seiki’s birth. Widely known for his painting entitled Lakeside, Kuroda (1866–1924) contributed greatly to the modernization of the arts in Japan. This exhibition aims to comprehensively look at Kuroda’s artistic achievements through his masterpieces.

Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul

This exhibition comprising of 231 ancient artworks from the National Museum of Afghanistan, illustrates some of the most magnificent cultures that flourished from around 2100 BC to 2nd century AD by presenting the “hidden treasures” excavated at four ancient sites in Afghanistan.

Smiling in Contemplation : Two Buddhas from Japan and Korea

半跏思惟像

Sculptures of pensive Bodhisattvas originated in India, the birthplace of Buddhism, and were later transmitted to China, Korea, and finally to Japan. Many sculptures of this type were created in Japan and Korea from the 6th to 8th centuries, including ones that are now considered masterpieces of ancient Buddhist sculpture. Counted among these is a National Treasure preserved at Chuguji Temple in Nara prefecture. Its face, embellished with a gentle smile, is recognizable to nearly everyone in Japan. Another such masterpiece is in the collection of the National Museum of Korea. Made from bronze, it is widely known in Korea as “National Treasure No. 78.” This exhibition is a truly unique opportunity to savor the beauty of Buddhist sculpture from both Japan and Korea.

A Journey to the Land of Immortals: Treasures of Ancient Greece

This exhibition showcases sculptures, fresco paintings, and metal objects from Greece. Let us set off on a journey through Greek art, which blossomed from the Neolithic to the Hellenistic periods in various areas in Greece, such as the Aegean Islands, including Cyclades and Crete, as well as Athens, Sparta, and Macedonia. This is the first large-scale exhibition in Japan of Greek artworks gathered solely from the country of Greece.

The Hidden Buddha of Rakuyaji Temple, Shiga

十一面観音菩薩坐像

Rakuyaji (Koka city, Shiga prefecture), an ancient temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, has preserved twenty Buddhist statues from the Heian period (794–1192) that were designated Important Cultural Properties. This exhibition is the first opportunity to show all twenty of these statues outside Rakuyaji Temple. The principal statue, a Seated Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu (Ekadasamukha), is approximately three meters high, exhibiting overwhelming presence. This exhibition shows, in one sweep, masterpieces of Heian-period Buddhist sculpture preserved in Rakuyaji Temple.

The Art of ZEN: From Mind to Form

Ink painting and chanoyu (the tea ceremony) were brought from China to Japan along with Zen Buddhism, and later grew into the central components of Japanese culture. This exhibition shows treasured objects brought together from the main and branch temples of the Rinzai and Obaku sects of Zen Buddhism in order to examine the history, art, and culture of Zen. Through Zen treasures such as portraits and the writings of high priests, Buddhist statues and paintings, decorative art objects, and wall paintings, the exhibition explores the roles that these artworks have played in Japanese culture.

Eternal Treasures from Kasuga Taisha Shrine

Designated a World Heritage Site, Kasuga Taisha Shrine (Nara prefecture) was built at the beginning of the Nara period (710–794) in prayer for the protection of the capital and the prosperity of the people. From ancient times, the shrine revered deer as divine messengers of the gods. This exhibition presents masterpieces of decorative art in the collection of Kasuga Taisha, which is regarded as the “treasure trove” of the Heian period (794–1192). Other artworks on exhibit include a number of fine objects such as prized swords, arms, and armor from Japan’s medieval period, as well as paintings and sculptures associated with people’s faith in Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
