Yanase Villa

柳瀬荘 This villa in Tokorozawa, Saitama prefecture, was a former country residence of Matsunaga Yasuzaemon (Jian). Since his donation of the premises to the Museum in March 1948, the villa as well as other site utilities underwent many repairs and developments. The whole premise covers 17,235 square meters. It includes the Orinkaku building, which is designated important cultural property as a typical example of private residence architecture of the Tempo era (1830-1844), Edo period, as well as the shoin-style Shagetsutei building and the Kyubokuan teahouse. The teahouse Shunsoro in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum also originally stood within the compound of the Yanase complex.
