The period from the Tang to the Song and Yuan dynasties saw the standard genres of Chinese painting emerge. Courtly paintings and literati paintings also flourished, leading the way for the painting trends of the Ming and Qing dynasties. From the Tang and Song dynasties onward, Chinese paintings brought to Japan greatly influenced developments in Japanese painting.
The Chinese paintings which spread throughout Japan include many outstanding works which hold an important position in Chinese painting history.
Selected masterworks of Chinese painting preserved in Japan will travel back to their homeland for this exhibition, which will coincide with Expo 2010 Shanghai China and the ICOM (International Council of Museums) 2010 General Conference in November to promote cultural exchange between China and Japan.

The exhibition, "Ganjin and Kukai: Commemorating Cultural Exhange between China and Japan" will also be on view at the Shanghai Museum over the same period, providing an excellent opportunity to explore cultural connections between the two countries through outstanding works of art.
