Tokyo National Museum is holding an exhibition of our collections featuring objects related to the samurai warriors class at Bowers Museum (Santa Ana, California) in the United States. This exhibition is based on "Samurai - Treasures of the Japanese

The Power of Dogu

Aiming to promote the understanding of Japanese culture and friendly international relationships, the Agency for Cultural Affairs holds exhibitions of Japanese art in countries abroad every year.
This year, at the British Museum in London, United Kingdom, we will hold an exhibition of dogu clay figurines, which are known as representations of the spiritual worlds and beliefs of the people of the ancient Jomon period.
A total of 67 objects will be on view, including five works from the Tokyo National Museum collection, such as the dogu excavated from Kamegaoka site, Aomori prefecture (Important Cultural Property).
The works will be exhibited at Tokyo National Museum after the London exhibition, from December 15, 2009 to February 21, 2010.

Art of the Samurai: Japanese Arms and Armor, 1156-1868

Aiming to promote the understanding of Japanese history and culture in order to develop friendly international relationships, the Agency for Cultural Affairs holds exhibitions of Japanese art in countries abroad every year. This year, as part of this project, an exhibition entitled "Art of the Samurai" will be held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.
Arms and armor will be the principal focus, bringing together the finest examples of armor, swords and sword mountings, as well as costumes such as surcoats, and paintings such as portraits of individual warriors, scrolls and screens. This is a comprehensive exhibition devoted to arms and armor of the samurai which represents the development of samurai culture based on their highly sophisticated aesthetic sensibilities.

Japan. Power and Splendour 1568-1868

  

This exhibition will be held as the largest event of "Japan Year 2009 in Milan". Through works from the Azuchi-Momoyama to Edo period, it highlights differences between Kyoto and Edo culture by exploring developments in Japanese art in the spheres of the warrior class, courtiers and townspeople alike.
A total of 214 objects will be on view, such as Rakuchu-rakugai Byobu (Scenes In and Around Kyoto), armors, swords, paintings, works related to literature, calligraphy.
