From the ancient statues of the Nara and Heian periods to the unique sculptures by the Edo artists Enku and Mokujiki, this exhibit will focus on the tradition of Ichiboku Buddhist statues, where the Japanese people embodied their faith by carving Buddhist figures out of a single wood. 146 of the most treasured Ichiboku statues will be on view, including the famed Juichimen Kannon (Ekadasamukha, National Treasure, Douganji Kannondo, Kogenji, Shiga Prefecture, on exhibit November 7 - December 3, 2006), which is to be exhibited for the first time outside of its home.

The exhibition consists of 4 sections in chronological order, "Sandalwood Sculpture", "Single-block Sculpture", "Hatchet Carving", and "Enku and Mokujiki".
