This special project commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the "Twenty Contemporary Calligraphers" exhibition is to be held in Room T3, first floor of Honkan, the main building of the Tokyo National Museum, and the Thematic Exhibition Room, first floor of the adjoining Heiseikan.

The "Twenty Contemporary Calligraphers" exhibition was established in 1957 (Showa 32), at a time when Japan had emerged from the confused postwar period and begun its remarkable recovery. During the succeeding half-century, 75 calligraphers in all, a stellar array of calligraphy masters, among them recipients of the Order of Culture and Persons of Cultural Merit, who have left an important mark on the history of calligraphy in these two most recent eras, have vied with each other for a place among the leading top 20 exponents of the art, further polishing their own techniques in the process. Part 1 illustrates trends in Japanese calligraphy from the Showa era on into the present Heisei era with works, now in the Tokyo National Museum's collection, by twelve calligraphers who showed works in the "Twenty Contemporary Calligraphers" exhibitions of the past. Part 2 exhibits new works at the Heiseikan by twenty calligraphers represented in the fiftieth exhibition.
